If the game is more important than the result; if you enjoy convivial conversation and a bar; and if you’re keen to play competitive ‘over the board chess’ in Hertfordshire Chesss Association competitions, Rothamsted Chess Club could be just the Club for you!
We meet regularly throughout the year - yes we keep going through the summer - and currently run two teams that compete in local chess leagues from October to April. This year our first team ended the season as Division 4 champions and play in Division 3 next season. After a successful debut in the U1600 league, our second team are looking forward next year to playing league competition in Division 5.
Club membership fees are a very reasonable £20 per year, reviewed annually, with a ‘try before you buy’ period for potential new members. To play competitively in league competitions members must also join the English Chess Federation (Bronze membership £20 pa 24/25).
We’re sorry but at present we don’t admit junior members (under 16) unless accompanied by a chess playing parent or responsible adult. We understand this is disappointing for many keen young chess players in the Harpenden area and we promise to keep the situation under review.
If you’d like to know more, contact Chris Dyer on info@rothamstedchessclub.org.uk, or call in and meet us on Tuesdays, 7pm till 10.00, at the Sports Pavilion, Rothamsted Research Centre, Harpenden.
The Club meets at the Sports Pavilion of Rothamsted Research, Harpenden. This is located opposite Harpenden Common nearby the A1081. Turn off the main road, following the road signs and after a short way enter the Research Institute site. Continue up a slight hill for about a quarter of a mile until you leave the buildings behind. On the left is a sports field and the Pavilion, with plenty of parking to the right.
